Connected worker platforms promise a transformed frontline. Buyers deserve a more specific claim than that. Across deployments, the returns that survive an honest accounting come from four mechanisms, each measurable, each with a failure mode that explains why some rollouts transform nothing.

Mechanism 1: capture replaces re-keying

Checks entered once at the station instead of written-then-keyed. The number is hours: most mid-size plants recover 40-120 weekly (run the arithmetic with the touch-count method). Failure mode: forms slower than the clipboard, the floor reverts, and the hours never materialize.

Mechanism 2: catch-time collapses

An out-of-range entry that flags at write-time gets fixed while the batch is in process; the same entry discovered at review gets fixed after shipment, or in a recall. The number is the catch-time delta: percent of deviations caught in-shift, before versus after. This is usually the largest dollar mechanism, and the one lost when deployments digitize forms without live flagging.

Mechanism 3: knowledge at the station

Work instructions on the ticket scan, veteran answers recorded and searchable at the machine. The number is time-to-competence for new hires (and error rates during ramp), which seasonal operations feel most (see skills tracking and tribal knowledge capture). Failure mode: content libraries nobody opens because retrieval is not at the point of work.

Mechanism 4: coverage meets the schedule

Badge-ins plus skills against today's plan answers 'can this crew build this schedule' before the shift starts instead of at the first missed station. The number is coverage gaps caught pre-shift. Failure mode: skills matrices maintained but never connected to the day's plan, data without a decision.

The honest comparison shoppers should run

Ask any vendor, including us, which mechanism their deployment turns on first, and what number it moves in 90 days.
