Giveaway reduction snack food work starts with an honest picture of where the free product actually leaves the building. On most bagged snack lines the answer is the same: the target weight is set higher than the label weight on purpose, because the crew learned the hard way that a run of underweight bags brings a checkweigher full of rejects, a compliance headache, and a supervisor asking questions. So the target creeps up. A chip bag labeled 8 ounces gets filled to 8.3 or 8.4. That extra fraction of an ounce is product the customer paid nothing for, and it multiplies fast.

Why the target weight drifts up and stays there
The target does not drift up because anyone is careless. It drifts up because the plant is managing risk with the only lever it can see. Snack product weight is not steady. Fried and baked snacks lose moisture in the fryer or the oven, so a batch that runs a little wet weighs more per piece and a dry batch weighs less. Extruded and puffed products change bulk density from one lot of meal or one screw wear point to the next. Seasoning and oil pickup in the coating tumbler adds weight that varies with drum load and application rate. Piece size itself wanders as dies and cutters wear.
All of that variation lands in the bag. The multihead weigher combines buckets to hit the target, but it can only work with the pieces it is fed, and its own scatter, the standard deviation of the fill, sets how close to the label you can safely aim. If the fill weight bounces around with a wide standard deviation, the operator has to hold the target high so the low tail still clears the minimum. The wider the scatter, the more you give away. Tightening giveaway is really a job of shrinking that scatter and then, only then, lowering the target to match.
- Weigher feed and calibration. A poorly leveled or drifting load cell, sticky product on the buckets, or an uneven radial feeder all widen the fill distribution and force a higher target. These are fixable, but only if you are watching the distribution, not just the average.
- Upstream moisture and density. A wet fryer batch or a dense meal lot shifts piece weight, so the same bag count consumes more product. If moisture and density are not tied to the fill data, the plant compensates with overfill instead of a process correction.
- Checkweigher set high to stay safe. When rejects spook the line, the easy move is to nudge the target up. That trades a visible reject rate for an invisible giveaway rate, and giveaway almost always costs more.
- SKU and changeover carryover. Targets set for one product often carry into the next run because nobody reset them, so a forgiving SKU inherits a padded target it never needed.

The reason giveaway survives is that it is quiet. An underweight bag is loud: it gets rejected, flagged, sometimes reported. An overweight bag sails through the checkweigher and out the door, so the loss never trips an alarm. The cost shows up only at the far end of the month as yield that came in a little light against the batch sheet, and by then it is impossible to say which line, which shift, or which SKU spent it.
The pieces you give away are the most expensive pieces in the plant. They already carry the full cost of grain or potato, oil, seasoning, gas for the oven or fryer, film, the weigher and bagger runtime, and the labor of the whole crew. Giving away finished snack is not like scrapping dough at the mixer; it is handing away the most-processed unit you make. - Catch a drifting weigher early. A load cell or feeder starting to wander shows up as a widening distribution hours before it becomes rejects, so you fix the cause instead of raising the target to cover it.
