How this is calculated
Manufacturing lead time is the sum of every time element a job passes through, whether or not that time adds value. Only run time actually transforms the product; the rest is waiting and handling.
The equivalent calendar figure divides total hours by 24; the workday figure divides by 8 for an eight-hour shift.

Reading it well
- Queue usually dominates. On most discrete lines, jobs spend far more time waiting between steps than being worked on, so the value-added ratio is often in the low single digits.
- Attack the wait, not the work. Speeding up run time barely moves lead time when queue is the giant. Shrinking batch sizes and work in process usually helps more.
- One job, one pass. These figures describe a single job through the process, not a full day of mixed production.
